Hiroshi stopped his stedy walk up the slope, turned and waited for his two companions, Sachi and Kenji to cach up to him. He was glad he was in better shape than they were. They were all students at Toyko University. Hiroshi majoring in geology, Sachi in photography, and Kenji in jornalism. They had been given an oppertunity to earn extra credit by assisting the geologists working at the Mt. Horb sight. Basicly that meant doing the dirty jobs in the camp that the important people didn't want to do. But you did get to see, do, and learn things, you could never do in the classroom. It also looked good on your resume.

The geologists, and their equipment had been flown in by helocopter, but for lowly collage students it was a day and a half hike to the site. {1} Hiroshi smiled as the other boys finaly caught up to him, dropping their packs, and sitting down to rest.

"Its getting late." "You guys rest here, I'll look around for a good spot to set up camp."

With that said He strode off through the under brush looking for a fairly level clearing they could set up their tents in. It was a few minutes later they heard Hiroshi shouting for them to come to him. Kenji looked over at Sachi shrugged and said.

"Well the sooner we go over there and make camp the sooner we can lay down and rest."

Sachi just grunted in agreament as they got up, grabbed their packs and started through the under brush. What greeted them was not what they expected. It was an abandoned camp site. Three Tents in a half circle around a fire ring. From the looks of things the site had been abandoned for a while. One tent had collapsed completely, and the other two were sagging badly. Hiroshi was bent over looking into one of the tents, he reached in and pulled out a backpack. Sachi spoke up.

"Hey Hiroshi whats going on?"

Hiroshi looked up at them.

"Thats what I'd like to know." "Who ever was here left everything behind, and they've been gone for at least two weeks."

"How do you know that?" Kenji asked. As Hiroshi started to dig through the pack he said.

"Look around, do you see any foot prints that we didn't make when we came in here." "This soil would hold foot prints for a long time, the only way for them to be gone would be for a storm to wash them away." "They had 2" of rain up here two weeks ago, I saw the weather report."

Sachi looked around scraching the back of his neck.

"But this whole area has been closed to hikers, and campers sence Mt. Hori blew up!"

Hiroshi stopped digging looking up at his companions.

"I know, thats what worrys me about this." "We're about a half day hike from the peak of Mt. Horb." "This would have made a good base camp for some one wanting to climb to the peak."

Hiroshi went back to digging in the pack, finaly finding what he was looking for.

"Hey look at this, I found an I.D. card." "Hmm, Ryoga Habiki, Lives in Tokyo, he's 16." "lets check the other tents for I.D., OK guys."

A few minutes later Sachi shouted.

"Hey I found a school I.D. from Furunkin High School, for a Ranma Saltome" Followed shortly by Kenji

"Hey look at this, its a Chinese pass port for some guy named, Mu Su, weird."

They sat quietly for a time looking at the I.D.s, finaly it was Sachi who said what they were all thinking.

"Do you realy think they're, dead?"

Hiroshi looked at his two companions.

"I hope not, but it dosen't look good."

Making up his mind Hiroshi opened his pack and pulled out the radio they had been given for emergencys.

"I'm going to call this in, Sachi, get out your GPS and give me our exact location, they'll want that."

It was a beautiful spring morrning in Nerma, but at the Tendo Dojo a feeling of forboding over shadowed this. For there was still no word from a young man named Ranma Saltome. The only one who didn't seem affected was Genma. Akane, and Nabiki had left for school, the two old fools were trying to cheat each other at the Go board, and Kasumi was doing the wash when they came. When she answered the door the feeling of forboding only grew stronger, as she put on her Kasumi the proper house wife face, and greated the two police officers. They had asked to speak to Genma Saltome. She had shown them right in. At first Genma had acted nervous, until he understood they weren't there to arrest him. Then he had become evasive. When asked if he had seen his son lately, or knew where he was. He would only say the boy had gone to the mountains to train with some freinds, and was due back any day. When asked if he knew which mountains he had simply said no.

Kasumi grew angry, she'd had enough. Clearing her throat as she stepped into the room, she saw Soun giving her a look of disaproval. She just stared back at him the anger and disapointment showing on her face. Soun broke down crying, blubbering about his dauther not loveing him anymore. Kasumi calmed herself and spoke.

"Officers, Ranma-kun sent me this, perhaps it will help."

Reaching into her apron pocket she pulled out a post card. On the front was a picture of Mt. Horb, on the back in Ranma's scrall was written

"Kasumi." "Me and the guys heading into the woods today." "With any luck will be at Mt. Horb tomorrow noon." "Wish us luck." "Ranma."

The date of the post mark was the day before Mt. Horb expolded. The officers turned and glared at the two men. Then turned to Kasumi. They told her of the abandend campsite found near Mt. Horb just yesterday, and how it led them here. How the post card placed Ranma and his freinds on Mt. Horb when it exploded. They were going to check with the other boys family's, but if no one had seen or herd from the boys. That Ranma and his friends would probably be declaired dead before the week was over. Kasumi wanted to run to her room, and cry her heart out, but she stealed her self to finish this first. She told them that Mu-su lived and worked at the Cat Cafe here in Nerma, and though she didn't know were Ryoga lived. She did know that his parents traveled a great deal, so would be hard to contact. Thanking her for her help, they promised to return the post card once the investagation was over.

After seeing the officers out, Kasumi's face took on a look of determination. She completly ignored the two fools, and went up stairs to Nabiki's room. Getting the desk key from its hiding place, she opened the drawer Nabiki kept her photos in. {2} Finding what she was looking for, she put everything back where it belonged and went to her room. Picking up a double picture frame from her dresser, she proceded to remove the old pictures, and place the new ones in. Once done she went down stairs. Seeing that her father and the panda were gone, she thought.

(Probably felt sorry for them self's and went out to get drunk as usual.) (Cowards!)

Picking up the phone she dailed a number from memory. After a few rings some one answerd.

"Hello."

A sob excaped as Kasumi struggled for words.

"A-Auntie, Sob, I-I need you."

"Kasumi?" "Is that you Kasumi?"

"Y-Yes Auntie."

"Are you hurt dear?"

"N-No." Sniff, sob. "I-I need you auntie, p-please."

"Of corse dear, I'll be there as soon as I can."

Sniff, "OK, I-I'll be in t-the Dojo, at M-Mothers shrine."

Kasumi hung up the phone and clutching the picture frame to her chest, made her way to the Dojo. Before Auntie Nodoka got there she had one more duty to preform. Kneeling before her mothers shrine, Kasumi lit the incennse and prayed.

"Mother I know this isn't the normal time I visit you, but something terrible has happened." "Ranma-kun h-has died mother, and I think he was in his cursed form when it happened." "I-I brought a picture of both his forms so you would recognize him."

Kasumi opened the picture frame and placed it next to her mothers picture. Two pictures of the same person and yet so different, one male, one female. Both with deep blue eyes, and a bright smile.

"Please mother I-I came to love him like my own little brother, please look after him for me."

Her final duty done Kasumi let all her control go and began to weep openly.

Nodoka, stopped her pacing and looked at herself in the hallway mirror. She saw a beautiful woman in her Late 30's with auburn hair, dressed in a white blouse, and loose fitting blue slacks. Reaching down she brushed at her knees.

(There's no help for it) she thought.

(I just finished in the garden when Kasumi called, and theres no time to change.) (The cab will be here any second.)

Just then a horn sounded out side. Nodoka grabbed the Saltome Honor blade, her purse, and rushed out side.

(If someone hurt Kasumi, my blade will taste their blood.)

Was her only thought. Nodoka didn't remember much of the Taxi ride, she had offered the man a large tip if he could get her there in less than 15 minutes. He had done it in 10. She had thrust easly twice the money owed at the man, and entered the Tendo home. Entering Dojo she found Kasumi kneeling before her mothers shrine, crying uncontrolably.

Nodoka calmed herself.

(Kasumi needs some one calm to comfort her.)

She told herself, and walked up to the girl. Thats when Nodoka saw the double picture frame on the shrine, there was no mistaking what those pictures ment sitting on the shrine.

(Oh Kami! No! No!)

Nodoka's purse, and blade clattered to the floor. Her whole body felt num.

"No." "No." she wisperd falling to her knees.

"Not Ranma!" "Not Ranko!" "Please!" "Please!"

Kasumi turned at the sound her tear stained face looking up at Nodoka.

"Oh Auntie, I-I..."

Nodoka turned and looked at her, tears running down her checks. She opened her arms invitingly, Kasumi wraped her arms around Nodoka, burying her face in the older woman's shoulder. Nodoka held her in her arms lying her head atop the younger womans. Both women crying out their greif and loss.

Akane walked into the school office wondering why she had been called from class, only to see Nabiki already there.

"What's going on Nabiki?"

Nabiki considerd charging Akane for the information, but the feeling of forboding she had been feeling made her decide not to.

"We're being sent home early for some sort of family emergency, no one seems to know anything more than that." "I've got a note from the Vice-principal excusing us from school."

As they walked home, Nabiki noticed that Akane seemed upset.

"Whats bothering you sis?"

"What do you think Nabiki!" "Im missing school, finals are comming soon, and some how I just know it's all that baka's fault!"

Nabiki just rolled her eyes at this and decided to let Akane simmer in her own jucies for awhile. As they entered their home and took off their shoes Nabiki called out.

"We're home."

And was answerd by her sister Kasumi's voice.

"In here sisters."

Entering the main room they found not only Kasumi, but Nodoka sitting at the table sipping tea. Nabiki noted right away the lack of tradinal komono that Nadoka normaly wore. She also relized where Ranma-chan got her figure from. But what realy got her attention was Kasumi's and Nodoka's faces, they had been crying. Finaly Kasumi spoke.

"Nabiki, would you get the video tape you made about those cursed by Jesenkyo." "I think it's time that Auntie was told the truth." "Akane please sit down."

There was an uneasy silence until Nabiki returned and placed a tape in the VCR, then turned and asked Kasumi.

"Do you want me to play it now."

"No, I just want it ready for later." Was Kasumi's reply. As Nabiki sat down, Kasumi took a deep breath and found her center.

(I must be strong for my family) She thought to herself. And so she told them of the morrning vist from the police, and what they had told her. As she finished Akane broke down Crying, and even Nabiki had tears trailing down her cheeks. Kasumi and Nodoka comforted the girls, but Nodoka's mind was puzzled. Finaly she asked.

"Kasumi, what the police told your explans what happened to my son and his friends. but what about Ranko?"

The room grew quiet. Kasumi sighed.

"Auntie, thats going to be very hard to explain." "Before I start I'd like to ask you if you beleive in real magic?"

Nodoka looked at Kasumi strangely before replying.

"Kasumi, I live in Juben." "We've got yoma, and magical girls running around fighting all the time, and you want to know if I beleive in magic?"

All three girls stared at her, thier eyes growing large. It was Nabiki who finaly spoke.

"You mean the Sailor Scouts are real?"

Nodoka just noded, and looked at Kasumi waiting for her to continue. And so the story of the ten year training trip came out. Each girl adding parts to the story that they had heard. All the abuse, the cat fist, the fianci's everything. They told her that Genma refused to take responsiblity for anything, and dumped it all on Ranma's head to deal with. Finaly they told her about Jusenko, the cursed springs, and what would happen if you fell into one. At this Kasumi asked Nabiki to play her tape.

Ranko sat on the edge of the deck in the warm sun reading. Katsuhito soon joined her carrying two cups of steaming tea. Setting the book down, she took the offered cup in booth hands taking small sips so as not to burn her mouth. After the tea was gone and the cups set aside, they sat in silence looking out over the small lake. It was Ranko who finaly broke the silence.

"I can't go back, can I?"

Katsuhito's looked down, his shoulders dropping, he had been dreding this moment.

"No, you can't." Was all he said. She felt like she'd just been gut punched by Ryoga, as the last bit of hope to go back to being a guy died. Tears made there way down her face, as she sat there staring at her hands folded in her lap. Finaly Ranko broke the silence.

"You knew, didn't you?" "You knew what the magic was doing to me."

The last said in a soft sad voice.

"Yes, I knew of the Laddle, and kettle, and what effect they would have on those cursed by jusenko." "And if I had told you when you first came here, what would you have done". " The kettle was distroyed, and the change in you was well underway". "Telling you then would only have made matters worse."

Ranko opened her mouth to protest, she wanted to yell, and scream at him for not telling her. But she stopped. In her mind she saw herself hobbling out of the valley on a crutch, and then drowning herself trying to swim to China. Kami-Sama, Had she been that desprate to be a man again? Closeing her mouth. She sat in silence, as she thought of the changes she'd gone through, and how she presently felt about herself. Had she changed that much in the short time she'd been here? Did she even want to be a boy again? A shudder ran through her body as she got her answer. It wasn't what she was expecting.

{1} Yes you can get to the mountain faster from the shrine. But thats Private Property, and Sacred land of the shrine. The Japanies wouldn't even think of intruding unless lives were in danger, or invited. So the day and a half trip over public lands.

{2} You think Kasumi cleans the house and dosn't know where everything is?
