Chaos Accelerando
Chapter 7 - Tutti
“Mom! Dad! I’m home!”
The front door opened as Makoto led Ami into the Kino residence. The brunette was a bit surprised when she didn’t get an immediate response. “Hello? Mom? Dad? Shi-chan?”
Ami closed the door behind her as Makoto moved through her home, looking for her family. There was something different about the house now, but she couldn’t quite place her finger on it. Looking around to see if something was out of place, she noticed that Ukyou’s combat spatula was propped up in one corner. Several strange tool-like objects that Ami guessed belonged to Siofra were spread out in another part of the living room. Her gaze shifted upwards to the hanging plants that decorated the hall. She noticed that they seemed even more vibrant and healthy than she remembered. Suddenly it clicked for her. The house, which over a year ago had seemed like a mausoleum, now had the feeling of a real home. The realization brought a smile to the shorthaired girl’s face.
Ami’s thoughts were disrupted suddenly as a portal formed in the living room. The two friends tensed up for a moment, but relaxed as they recognized the people who stepped out. Ukyou, much to their surprise, just walked straight from the portal and right past the young girls as if she hadn’t even seen them. The look on the older woman’s face was one of deep contemplation mixed with a healthy dose of tension.
“Ami-chan?” Ranma’s voice snapped Ukyou out of her thoughts and the woman finally noticed their visitor.
“Ami? What are you doing here?” The note of irritation in the older woman’s voice caused Ami to step back a little. Ukyou noticed her flinch and grimaced. “I’m sorry, Ami-chan. I just wasn’t expecting anyone to be here, except for maybe Mako-chan.”
The young girl in question chose that moment to come back into the living room. Noticing the look on her mother’s face, she immediately asked in a concerned voice, “Mom? What’s wrong?”
Ukyou rubbed her temple for a moment before responding. “Mako-chan, we need to talk. Ami-chan, I’m afraid I’m going to need my daughter for a while.”
Nodding slowly, Ami gestured towards Ranma, who had just closed the dimension door. “Actually, I came to speak with Mr. Kino, if that’s all right.”
Ranma gave her a small smile and a nod. “Sure. Let’s go into the kitchen and you can tell me what’s on your mind.” With that, the pigtailed martial artist/mage led the young Ami out of the living room while Ukyou motioned for Makoto to follow her into the younger brunette’s bedroom. Once inside, Ukyou closed the door. “Mako-chan, something’s come up.” Sitting down on the edge of the bed, she patted the mattress next to her. As her daughter sat, the mother continued. “You know that your father and I went adventuring for many years with Ruval, Breeze, and Murphy.”
Makoto blinked at the Murphy reference, since this was the first time she had heard of him. In fact, she hadn’t known that the priest and elemental wizard had traveled with her parents. She had always assumed it was just her parents. It seemed more romantic that way. She didn’t mention any of this, though, since she didn’t want to divert her mother from what was obviously a very important topic for her. Nodding her head, she prompted her mother to continue.
“Well, on many of those adventures, we came across artifacts that were too dangerous, too risky, or just plain Evil.” To Makoto, there was something a bit creepy about the way her mother said ‘Evil’, almost as if she could hear the capital letter. It made it sound like some of those artifacts were alive. “For various reasons, we couldn’t destroy some of them, and naturally we couldn’t just leave them lying around. So we’ve been storing them at Ruval’s temple. They have wards and a special chamber there that do a good job of keeping them out of trouble. We just found out from Ruval and Breeze that recently some suspicious people have been making disturbing inquiries that have the head priests worried. To put it bluntly, now that we’re home, they wants us to get our junk out of their temple.”
“Okay…”
Not looking at her daughter any more, Ukyou shifted her gaze to one wall. “Your father needs a dojo. The yard just isn’t safe enough for him to practice his stronger techniques, and he wants to start taking students again.”
Makoto blinked some more at the shift in the conversation.
“It also wouldn’t be good if the Senshi keep dropping in for training, and the house is definitely too small to practice in, so a bit more security is going to be needed.”
Shaking her head, Makoto just couldn’t figure out what her mother was rambling about. There wasn’t much they could do about the security or the yard or the artifacts. That would mean…
Makoto’s eyes shot up just as her mother looked her straight in the eyes. “Mako-chan, we need to move and find a bigger, more private place to live.”
Panic seized the young brunette’s heart. “But what about my friends? You can’t ask me to leave them!”
Making placating gestures towards her daughter, Ukyou tried to calm her down. “Sugar, we’re not going to leave unless we have to. We know how important your friends are to you. We’re going to see if we can find any place in Juuban that fits our needs.”
“But can’t we keep this house too? Mom, it’s my home! It was the only thing I had left when you and dad vanished. Even though you’re back, you can’t take it from me!” Tears were threatening at the corners of the young girl’s eyes.
Ukyou felt her heart ache as she held her daughter close. “I’m sorry, honey. But we can’t afford both.”
Tears began to make their way down Makoto’s cheeks. “But what about all that treasure you had to have found?”
Rocking back and forth while holding her daughter, the mother shook her head sadly. “We can’t use it here. Jade understands about that sort of thing, but the Japanese government won’t accept ‘We wiped out a horde of undead spiders’ as a legitimate source of income. We’re still having problems with the fact that we’re legally dead. While the school has accepted it, the government is having issues with us and they aren’t taking ‘we’re from Nerima’ as an excuse.” Stroking her hand through Makoto’s hair, she gave her a comforting squeeze. “Remember, Mako-chan, now that we’re back together, anywhere we live is going to be home, as long as we have each other.”
Makoto nodded weekly as she slowly got her tears back under control. “I know, mom… it’s just…”
Ukyou smiled. “I know. Sugar, this is the house where we watched you grow up. It’s important to us too.” She gently wiped Makoto’s face clean with a handkerchief. “Now, let’s go see if Ami’s done with Ranchan yet.”
The younger brunette followed the older one out of her room and back to the living room. Makoto saw Ami and Ranma walk into the room at the same time. The girl genius smiled happily as she ran over to her friend. “Mako-chan! Mr. Kino has agreed to be my sensei!”
Makoto could only blink in surprise. “I didn’t know you were interested in the martial arts.”
Ami started to say something, but stopped as she seemed to be considering her words. “Well, we will be studying martial arts, but I meant that he was going to teach me aura magic! He thinks I have the talent for it!”
A small amount of joy made its way back into Makoto’s heart. “Hey, that’s great!”
“There is one condition though,” Ranma interjected. “We have to get your mother’s permission.”
Ami and Makoto froze. Slowly turning to him, the potential mage asked, “Why?”
“Because the training will take a lot of time, add that to your schoolwork and study habits, and your mom’s not gonna see you very often. It would be better if she knew what you were up to.” Ami didn’t see it, but Makoto and Ukyou both noticed that Ranma seemed to have reservations about something. “Besides, do you actually enjoy lying to her? Trust me, the sooner she gets used to the idea, the better.”
Ami stood there, thinking it over for quite a while. When she glanced at her friend, Makoto easily read the question in her eyes. The brunette gave a small nod in answer. With a heavy sigh, Ami said, “All right.”
After Ami had left, Makoto finally realized something. “Mom, where’s Siofra? Did she stay behind on Jade?”
Ukyou shook her head. “No, that friend of hers, Brianna, invited Siofra over to check out some of her latest creations. Bebops or something like that.”
“Oh, okay. Speaking of friends, mom, you mentioned some of yours earlier. I’ve met Breeze and Ruval, of course, but who’s Murphy?” The teenager was surprised as her mother stared at her for a few short seconds before sitting down heavily on the sofa. Makoto was startled to see moisture forming in the older woman’s eyes as a look of ineffable sadness came over her face. “I’m sorry!” She apologized quickly. “If you’d rather not talk about it…”
“It’s okay,” Ukyou said weakly. “Sit down. Befo-“ Her voice broke and she took a moment to gather her wits. “Before I answer that, I want to ask you something. Do you have an answer for me yet?”
“An answer, mom? To wha- oh that… sharing… no, no I don’t. Sorry.”
Ukyou smiled weakly. “Don’t be sorry, sugar. It’s a tough question. It took me over ten years to answer it myself.” She seemed to think for a second, and then continued with a slight hesitation. “Murphy… was a friend of your father’s and mine. You can actually thank her for the fact that we were able to come back to you. She saved your father’s life when we first arrived in Jade, and she helped us find our feet in a strange new world.”
“She? I thought Murphy was a guy’s name?”
Ukyou chuckled a little as a bit of life returned to her face. “Her name was actually Maer Fae.” Ukyou’s mouth worked over the strange pronunciation. “As you can see, if we were going to talk with her very often, we had to come up with something we could say easily, so we came up with Muruhi, and with practice Murphy.”
“That makes sense. Kinda like Shi-chan. It’s kinda hard for me to say Siofra right unless I think about it. So, uhm… what happened?”
“She died just a month before we came back to you.” This time, Ukyou was unable to hold back the tears. Instantly Makoto had crossed the distance and gathered her mother into a tender hug. She held her mother tightly as the older woman sobbed into her shoulder. Makoto just held her until the tears slowly ran out. “Thank you, dear… I’ve been bottling that up for some time now.”
“I don’t mind, mom,” Makoto said with a sympathetic smile. “I understand about holding stuff like that in for too long. It never seems to help, though. You have to let it out.” Inwardly she thought about all the years she was angry at the world, for her parents’ deaths, for the system that didn’t care about her, about the other kids that teased her. And then she thought about the blonde haired ditzy girl that helped her get rid of all of those feelings and begin to heal. Yes, she understood about holding things in.
Ukyou wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. “I didn’t have a lot of choice, though. It would have caused a chain reaction. Ranchan and Shi-chan were both fond of her as well. She was like another mother to Shi-chan. I couldn’t go to pieces in front of her.”
Makoto gave her mother another hug before getting up. “Are you going to be all right?”
Ukyou nodded. “I’ll be fine. You go on and get to bed. You’ve got school tomorrow.”
“All right, mom. Good night. I love you. And if you ever want to talk about anything, I’m here.”
“I love you too, sugar,” Ukyou replied with a smile as she considered her daughter’s words. Her little Makoto certainly had grown up into a very caring young woman. She was so proud.
After Makoto left the room, though, a small frown appeared on the Weaponmaster’s face. In a barely audible whisper, she said, “How am I going to explain to you about who Murphy really was?”
School passed quickly for Makoto, but she noticed Ami nervously checking the clock on a number of occasions. It was obvious that the girl genius was deeply concerned over the meeting that was going to happening between her mother and Ranma. The brunette really couldn’t blame her. If the situation were reversed, she’d be nervous too. When the final bell did ring, Makoto watched as her friend slowly began her trek home.
Watching her go, Makoto realized that she herself had no real reason to hurry home. Her father was most likely going to be busy with Ami and her mother, Ukyou was working on finding a new home, and Siofra was still visiting with Brianna. The brunette had a lot of things to think about, and she just did not feel like doing it at home. Her decision made, Makoto walked slowly down the street on a path that would take her through the park.
The wind tugged occasionally at her uniform as she walked past various groups of people. She saw several happy couples holding hands, gazing lovingly at each other, and sometimes kissing. Watching them out of the corners of her eyes as she passed, she was surprised at how jealous of them she felt. She also saw a few couples that were obviously not happy. Sometimes it was fairly obvious that they had just had a small argument, but there were a few that had such animosity floating between them that she wondered why they were even bothering to try and put on the appearance of being a couple. In a small fit of self-pity, she thought to herself, ‘They have no real problems. Not like me. They don’t have to deal with dragons, extra wives, or the fact that the person they love is the prince of a kingdom a thousand miles away.’ They had normal concerns, normal relationships, even the bad ones. She wanted that.
Snapping out of that line of thought, she considered why the bad couples stayed together. It occurred to her that one of the reasons might just be fear: Specifically, the fear loneliness. ‘Are they so afraid of be alone that they’ll stay in a bad relationship? One that’s obviously hurting both of them?’ She let that thought roll around in her mind as she finally reached the park. ‘Why do I find that so surprising? I’ve done it. Even after Keiichi told me he’d never go out with such a boyish girl I still longed for him. I just wanted to not be alone.’ That line of thought brought her back to her current problem. ‘Is that what’s going on with Herb-chan? Am I that desperate for someone to like me that way that I’m willing to consider sharing him with two conniving, backstabbing bi-‘ Makoto put the brakes on that line of thought. While it might apply to 6, or Helen as she was calling herself now, it definitely didn’t apply to Jane. The wurm had been more than helpful in risking her life during the fight, aiding in their escape from the dungeon, and in asking for almost nothing when Herb offered to grant her any favor that he could. It was Helen that had taken all of her hopes and smashed them against the rocks. And it was Herb that had gone along with it. Oh sure, she had told her friends she understood, but that was the logical part of her. The emotional part felt betrayed by both of them. A dark line of thought pushed its way forward.
‘Dragon hunting is legal on Jade, and Earth certainly has no laws against it.’ A mental image of her standing over Helen’s body flashed through her mind. Makoto looked a bit silly in a classic samurai outfit holding a blood-soaked spear while standing with one foot on the drake’s corpse. A tiny feeling of satisfaction wafted through her before being suddenly squelched. Much as she might hate Helen now, she hadn’t done anything worth murder. Considering all of the youma she had killed and how she felt about those deaths, Makoto felt a bit sick about the fact she had even thought of doing that to the drake.
Even going past the fact that killing was just wrong, especially for such a petty cause, there were other reasons she would never follow through on that line of thought. First off, she knew why Helen had done it. The drake had been abused by the laws of her people since birth, and the thought of being alone in the world terrified her. That was something Makoto could understand quite well. She might hate what Helen had done, but examining her feelings, she couldn’t bring herself to hate the drake for her cowardly selfishness. Secondly, there was the fact that she didn’t want to hurt Jane. The wurm had done a lot for her and her family, and even though they had only known each other for a very short time, she thought of the purple-clad woman as a friend; and Makoto would rather die than hurt a friend, and Helen’s death would hurt Jane as much as it would hurt Makoto if Usagi or one of the others died. ‘Heck, I think even Herb would be hurt if something happened to that sniveling drake.’
A few moments later her head snapped up as that thought registered. “Why would Herb be hurt by that?” She asked softly. A sense of dread began to build up in her as she slowly focused on the bond she shared with the Musk prince. Seconds turned into minutes, and then she had her answer. It was clear, obvious, and unmistakable. Herb had developed feelings, honest feelings, for both of his wives. The analytical part of her mind was surprised to note just how intensely that hurt, despite the fact that it shouldn’t have been a big surprise; the three of them were married after all. The emotional part of her mind told the analytical part to shut the $#!@ up! For a moment she considered searching out how Herb felt about her, but something stopped her. She was afraid that he might not have any feelings for her any more, but it was the possibility that he might still love her that truly terrified her. Finally, she released her focus, unable to dare, even for a moment, to seek out the truth.
The sound of tortured metal ripping apart barely registered on her senses as she slammed her right fist into one of the lampposts that lit up the park at night. Tears, slow at first but building up in speed, rolled down her face and fell to the ground. She didn’t notice the people that had been enjoying the park quickly find reasons to be elsewhere. All except one.
“Miss, are you all right?” A gentle voice broke through the pain.
Makoto, halfway between depression and anger, glared at the speaker. He was a tall, dark-haired, kind-looking, middle-aged man in a black gi-like outfit and glasses. “What makes you think I’m not all right,” she asked, unable to keep her voice from cracking a bit.
The man pointed at the lamppost… or at least where the base of the lamppost was. At about shoulder height to her it ended in jagged metal and sparking wires. A few feet away lay the rest of the post. She looked back to the stranger and noticed that he was now pointing at her right hand. Looking down she saw a several trails of blood dripping down to the concrete. Holding up her hand with a somewhat amazed look on her face she noticed where the torn metal had sliced into parts of her flesh and left blood trails. So fixated was she on the surprising sight that she almost didn’t notice the man’s hands until they were holding her injured one. “Hey!”
“Calm down,” he said with a gentle smile. “It’s all right, I’m a doctor.”
Makoto snorted in disbelief. “Yeah right. A doctor just happened to be walking by just in time for me to hurt my hand.” She was a bit surprised when the man nodded with a smile and suddenly produced a roll of gauze and a bottle of antiseptic from inside his gi. “Wha?”
The man chuckled a bit as he examined her hand. “Good, there’s nothing broken.” Nodding to himself, he applied the antiseptic and began to wrap her wounds. “A while back I used to take care of a bunch of… enthusiastic teenagers, and I got into the habit of carrying certain emergency medical supplies on me. I’ve just never bothered to get out of the habit.” Despite the emotional and physical pain she was feeling, Makoto couldn’t help but notice the wistful tone that crept into his voice. “There. All done.”
Looking at her hand, she was surprised to note she felt almost no pain. On top of that, the bandages didn’t interfere with her hand movements at all. She gave the man a small smile and a bow. “Thank you, doctor…?”
“Tofu Ono. But please, just call me Dr. Tofu. Dr. Ono makes me feel old. And you are?”
“Makoto Kino.” A moment of silence passed between them. “Uhm, Dr. Tofu… how much do I owe you for-?” She held up her bandaged hand.
The doctor laughed and slapped his leg with one hand. “Don’t worry about it. Since you’re the first patient I’ve had since I moved here, it’s on the house.” The ever-present smile on Dr. Tofu’s face took on a hint of sadness. “You know, you remind me of one of those teenagers. Two of them actually. One had a habit of punching poles and injuring herself while doing it. The other… I don’t know exactly what it is, but you do remind me of her. Oh well…” He took a business card from a pocket and handed it to her. “If you ever find yourself injured again, please feel free to visit. I just opened this week.”
“Thank you, Dr. Tofu,” Makoto said with another bow.
“It was a pleasure to meet you, Makoto. Take care. Oh, if you ever want to talk, I’ve been accused of being a good listener.” With that he turned and walked away.
Makoto stared after him for a while as she idly slipped his card into her school bag. As she brought her hand out, she looked down at it. She clenched her fist slowly and felt a small flash of pain from the wounds beneath the bandages. Shaking her head, she made her decision. “I can’t do it. I know I love him, but I don’t want the pain of sharing him like that. I can’t be that desperate.” A small feeling of peace came upon her once the decision was made. It wasn’t much relief, but at least she felt like she could finally work on putting Herb behind her.
Makoto sighed as she wearily opened the door to her home.
“Where have you been, Sugar?”
The brunette turned to look at her mother, who was sitting on the couch in the living room. “I was just out walking.”
“Ah.”
Makoto raised an eyebrow as she watched her mother’s face. The woman was obviously distracted. “Is something wrong, mom?”
“What? Oh, no… we just had an… interesting day. As you know, Ranchan went to speak with Ami’s mother about training. Well, he ended up with two students instead of one.”
Makoto blinked in surprise. “Ami’s mother?”
With a nod, Ukyou continued. “Aya Mizuno has a talent for magic. What’s more, she already knew that Ami was Sailor Mercury.” The older woman chuckled at the way her daughter’s jaw dropped. “Apparently she saw a certain blue-suited Senshi climbing in a certain young lady’s window one night and put two-and-two together. Well, after that it was decided that all of the parents should know. Guess what?”
Makoto had a feeling what the guess was. “They already knew?”
Ukyou tapped her nose and pointed at Makoto. “Bingo. Bin and Rica Aino figured that one out back when Minako was Sailor V. It’s one of the reason’s that they’re so overprotective of her. And apparently both Usagi and Luna talk in their sleep, so there went that secret. And, of course, Rei’s grandfather has known since the beginning.”
“So, all that creeping around, trying to be inconspicuous?”
“Was pretty much pointless. Oh, except for Shingo and Yuuichiru. They don’t have a clue.”
“Oi.”
“That’s pretty much how I felt.”
“And that’s what had you so distracted just now?”
Ukyou’s brow furrowed a bit. “No, it… it’s just something else that happened.” The older woman paused for a moment as she gazed intently at her daughter. Makoto became uncomfortable under that scrutiny. Finally, her mother seemed to reach a decision. “We spoke with the Ainos, they told us about a group that might be able to help us take care of our money problems.”
Makoto instantly brightened. “Really?”
“Yes. However, Ranchan and I are a little leery.”
“Why? They’re not Yakuza or something, are they?”
“No, but… we’re not sure they’re the kind of people we want to deal with. Ranchan and I are going to speak with one of their former members to get a better idea of what they’re really all about.”
“Who are you going to talk to?”
“Dr. Theodore Diggers.”
Makoto blinked in surprise. “Really? Well, at least it’s someone you can trust, right?” She reached up with her right hand to brush some hair out of her face.
“Right. I’ll… Mako-chan, what happened to you’re hand?”
Makoto could only blink as her mother seemed to teleport from the couch to right in front of her. “I accidentally cut it earlier. Don’t worry, the doctor said it was all right.”
“That’s good,” Ukyou said with a relieved sigh. “When will we get the bill?”
Makoto dug around in her bag for the business card. “He said it was a freebie, since I was his first patient since he opened shop in town.” She found what she was looking for and walked over to hand it to her mother. “He’s a really nice guy.”
Ukyou smiled cheerfully. “He sounds like it, offering a freebie like that. I’ll have to-“ Ukyou read the card as she finished her sentence. “$#!*!”
With a stunned expression on her face, Makoto pointed down the hall. “Bathroom’s there, mom.” Looking closer at her mother’s face, the brunette was surprised to find it had gone quite pale. “Mom?”
“Coincidence. It has to be coincidence. He just happened to show up again… shortly after Herb came by for a visit… when we’ve been gone for eight years… yeah right.” The elder Kino rested her forehead in the palm of her hand. “Kamis, I don’t ask for much. A chance to raise my family in peace is all I want. Please, if you have any hint of compassion, let this not be an omen of things to come.”
“Mom,” Makoto said with a tremble in her voice, “you’re really freaking me out! Don’t tell me that nice man is actually a child molester or something.”
Her daughters voice snapped her out of whatever strange mood had taken Ukyou. “No, he’s not that kind of man at all. He used to be about the only doctor in Nerima who was willing to put up with all of our crap back then. He’d fix up our wounds, give us a pat on the back, and some advice that we usually ignored, all for free.”
“That sounds like a good thing. Isn’t it?” Describing Makoto as confused would have been a serious understatement.
“Normally, yes. But you have to remember, Ranma and I fled Nerima and didn’t tell anyone about our name change or our marriage. I’m sure Doc won’t do anything to harm us, but it just makes me a little paranoid that he shows up shortly after someone else from our past appeared. After fifteen years of nothing, suddenly having two of the NWC pop up just makes me a bit paranoid. I don’t… WE don’t want Juuban to turn into another Nerima, do we?” The last was said with a trace of humor.
Makoto nodded, feeling a little better as the dark mood that had gripped her mother vanished. “Right. I’ve heard enough stories about that place to know that I like Juuban the way it is.” She hugged her mother back. “So, should I avoid Dr. Tofu?”
Ukyou shook her head without any hesitation. “No. He’s a good man. Ranchan and I will just have to talk with him to try and head off a few problems before they can start.” A contemplative look crossed her face as she tapped her chin with one finger. “We might even be able to tell him about Shi-chan. He always handled any of the weirdness that came down pretty well, from gender-bending curses to demonic possession, and he never betrayed a trust.” Makoto smiled as her mother laughed a bit. “Oh, there were some interesting times with him. And may all the heavens help you if you were ever in the room with him when Kasumi showed up!” Ukyou’s laugh suddenly strangled itself. Makoto nearly let out a laugh at the comical pole-axed expression that shot across her face. “Crap.”
The younger brunette was confused. “What does Aunt Kasumi have to do with it?”
Ukyou’s features returned to normal as she held one hand up to her forehead. She just knew a major migraine was forming. “The Doc used to be crazy in love with Kasumi. Whenever she was around, his ability to grasp reality pretty much vanished. His patients all knew better than to be anywhere near him when she was around. He disappeared a short while before everything went bad in Nerima, and we all figured he was on some kind of training journey to learn to control himself in Kasumi’s presence. If he managed to get control of it, he should be fine… I hope.” Ukyou clapped her hands together and uttered a small prayer. When she was done she looked over at her daughter again. “Go put your stuff away, dear. I have a call to make.”
Makoto nodded before walking to her room and putting away her school things. A quick change into more comfortable clothes had her feeling a little bit better. Once she was back in the living room, she saw her mother dialing on the phone. Not really having anything better to do, Makoto sat down and listened in.
“<Theo?>” Her mother asked in English. “<This is Ukyou Kino. I was wondering if we could->” The look that came to her mother’s face set Makoto’s nerves on edge. “What!? <Is she all right? I understand. Yes. Thank you. Can you open a gate? I don’t think my husband will be able to under the circumstances. Yes. Yes, I know where that is. Thank you.>” It was fortunate that the call ended when it did, since a few seconds later the handset shattered from the force of Ukyou’s grip.
“Mom? What’s wrong? Did something happen to Shi-chan?”
“Yes and no. She’s fine, she just fainted. Brianna invited her to her sister’s wedding and someone tried to crash it. As soon as Ranchan gets back from Ami’s we’ll head to where Theo’s going to open a dimension door for us.”
The trip to the gate site was spent in tense anticipation. Ranma groused about not being able to open the portal himself and having to rely on someone else while his daughter was in trouble, Ukyou simply grew tenser as each second ticked by, and Makoto just felt like everything was happening at once. The result was a fairly irate trio who stepped through a glowing door in Japan and emerged out of an identical one in Georgia, USA.
“<Where is she?>” Ukyou couldn’t keep the edge out of her voice. Fortunately Julia, who was there with her husband to greet them, ignored it. She simply motioned for Ukyou to follow her down one of the halls in what was obviously a fairly large mansion.
Ranma didn’t join them, instead turning to face Theo. “<What exactly happened?>” Makoto could see her father just barely keeping his anger under control. He looked like he was about to say something more, but he managed to stop himself.
“<My middle daughter, Brittany, was getting married today. Brianna, my youngest daughter, invited Siofra to attend since she was already visiting. Your daughter accepted and everything was going well. Before the ceremony could actually begin, an unexpected visitor arrived. Specifically, a young werecheetah boy named Raphiel Rey.>”
Her father’s eyes widened, which confused Makoto. “<Is unusual?>” The brunette grimaced at her own words. English was not really her strong suit.
Theo nodded as he turned to answer her. “<Until that moment, there was only one known living werecheetah: my daughter, Brittany. The fact that there was another one still alive threw all of us off balance. We…>” Theo closed his eyes as he tried to keep his voice under control. “<We thought about calling off the wedding.>”
“<Why?>” Makoto asked in confusion.
Theo sighed softly as he answered. “<For very stupid reasons, we understand now. But that isn’t the point any more. The point is that there was something about Raphiel that didn’t sit well with Siofra. She confided in me that…>” At this point the gray-haired man looked around conspiratorially before continuing in Japanese. “She felt that he wasn’t what he appeared to be. Apparently there is an enchantment on werecheetahs called the Doom Gaze. It terrifies any wererat that makes eye contact with them. Raphiel didn’t have that enchantment.” Returning to English and a normal tone of voice, he continued. “<After that, Raphiel went to speak with Britanny and Stripe, her fiancé. We were just about to announce the postponing of the wedding when Mother Dearest brought up a solution that would leave everyone happy. As it turns out, there was one who was not happy with that idea.>”
Ranma finally waved his hands in irritation. “<Please, get to the point!>”
Theo nodded, unruffled by the man’s interruption. He was a father himself, so he fully understood where Ranma was coming from. “<A while back, Brittany made an enemy of the high priestess of El Dorado, Tanya. The reasoning behind it is unimportant to your question, so I won’t go into it. Suffice it to say that she wanted to break up the wedding. When her plans were disrupted, it was revealed that Raphiel was an incredibly complex clay golem she had created in order to drive a wedge between Brittany and Stripe.>”
Ranma shook his head in disbelief. “<How the hell can an archmage mistake a golem as anything but?>”
Makoto noticed a very uncomfortable look come to the doctor’s face. “<Tanya used genesis clay. It made it almost impossible to distinguish him from a real person. After she destroyed Raphiel, Tanya, using one of the other priestesses as a hostage, was about to make her escape when your daughter manage to sneak up behind her with a stun rod and knocked both Tanya and her hostage out.>”
Makoto and Ranma both felt some measure of pride from that fact. The quiet little girl had done something that apparently no one else, including an archmage and the Armsmaster of Jade, had been able to do. “<So why did she end up fainting?>”
Theo chuckled a little at that memory. “<Brittany hugged her and thanked her for saving her wedding.>”
“<And that caused her to faint, why?>”
Theo cocked an eyebrow as both members of his audience failed to connect the dots. In Japanese, he said, “Brittany is a werecheetah. Siofra is who she is.”
“The Doom Gaze,” Ranma said with understanding and a small laugh. “<So she really wasn’t in danger?>”
Theo shook his head. “<No.>”
Both Kinos let out long, relieved breaths. “<So, did the wedding finish all right?>” Ranma asked.
Theo nodded with a smile. “<The ceremony concluded just a few minutes ago. Most of the guests are gathering in the reception area.>” The sound of footsteps behind him caused the doctor to turn around. “<Ah, good.>” He motioned for the person to join them. She was tall, Makoto noticed right off the bat. The woman also had very well developed muscle tone. A streak of white shot through the long black hair that cascaded down her back. All in all she had a very striking presence that somewhat intimidated the brunette. “<This is a friend of Brittany’s. She’s also the young lady that caught Siofra when she fainted.>”
Makoto and Ranma both smiled gratefully at the woman, who waved off the compliment. “<Please, it was the least I could do for the girl that saved the wedding. Although why she screamed like that I’ll never understand. I mean, she knew Brittany was a werecheetah.>”
Makoto laughed nervously while Ranma waved a hand dismissively. “<She has a small problem with c-c-c-cats.>”
The woman raised an eyebrow but let the stutter slide and accepted the response. “<Oh, forgive me, I haven’t introduce myself. I’m Jetta.>”
Everyone suddenly felt a strange tenseness fill the air. Theo turned a surprised stare towards Ranma as the martial artist’s voice went oddly calm. “<Jetta? As in the sister of Sander and daughter of Brendan and Azalea?>
Jetta blinked in surprise. “<Why yes, though please never mention->“ She was rudely cut off as Ranma turned to Theo.
“<Doctor, pardon me but I need to check up on my daughter.>” Without waiting for a response, the martial artist brushed past Jetta and stalked down the same hallway that Ukyou and Julia had taken.
“<What was THAT about?>” Jetta asked with some sense of outrage.
“<I have no idea,>” Theo answered in confusion. “<He was fairly reasonable up until you told him your name. Are there any werewolves in Japan?>”
Jetta shook
her head. “<No. Almost every werewolf left in the world lives in Ireland
now.>” The raven-haired woman noticed that Makoto was still standing there,
staring open-mouthed after her father. “<Young one, do you know why he acted
the way he did?>”
Makoto shook her head and closed her mouth. “<No. I not have thought. I never see father act… mean.>” She turned to face Jetta and bowed deeply. “<I sorrow for insult. Forgive please, but must follow.>” With that the brunette ran after her father, leaving a very confused pair of adults behind.
In a hidden location somewhere in Europe, a crystal ball flew across a darkened room to smack against a wall. Though the sphere survived, cracks spider-webbed all across its surface.
“How DARE she!” Several objects that were usually used in ritual sorcery joined the ball on the floor as the source of the voice hurled anything it could get its hands on. “I knew she had taken her before the programming was complete, but the b#!@ had NEVER even STARTED the programming! Thirteen years… thirteen years and incalculable resources all WASTED!” Fury seared its way higher and higher throw the ranting figures being. “And what’s more, some of those… meddlesome… FOOLS saw my tool change in that moment!
Storming its way over to the intercom that rested on a heavy desk, the figure stabbed down one of the buttons. “Get me a status report on those three imbeciles and get them back here. I don’t care if their lessons are finished or not, I want those three in my office by the end of the day or you’ll suffer for every minute I’m kept waiting!” Without waiting for a reply, the figure released the button and leaned angrily against the edge of the desk. Holding up its hand, the rather irate being ignited a jet of flame from the tip of its fingers. After lighting a cigar with the flame, the figure, now revealed to be an elderly and bespectacled male wererat, stared contemplatively at nothing in particular. After several minutes, he reached over and in a much more calm manner pressed one of the buttons.
“Yes, Lord Gothwrain?”
“Get me a list of our agents in Japan.”
“Yes, Lord Gothwrain.”
The wererat released the button and stared at the damaged ball. “Perhaps its not all lost, just yet. This could still be used to my advantage.” A low chuckle began to fill the room as plans formed in Gothwrain’s mind. “Yes, this could be quite fun.”
